Oatmeal is prepared from oats,which is a a type of cereal grain.Its botanical name is Avena sativa.Oatmeal is prepared by rolling,crushing,grinding oats into a coarse powder.It can be prepared with water,milk,yogurt or it can be eaten in the form of pancakes,muffins,cookies etc.

Oats grow in the cooler and moister regions of the temperate zones.

North Indian Dish:

Oats and roasted capsicum soup :

Ingredients:

1.5 tbsp roasted quick cooking rolled oats
2.2 medium red capsicum
3.2 cups roughly chopped tomatoes.
4.2 bay leaves
5.1 clove garlic
6.1 tsp dry red chilli flakes
7.Salt tot taste

Method:

1.Pierce each red capsicum with a fork and roast them over an open flame till they turn black.
2.Cool,wash them and remove the skin,stem,seeds and chop them.Keep aside.
3.Combine the tomatoes,bay leaves and garlic along g with 2 1/2 cups of water in a deep pan and cook on a medium flame for 10 minutes.
4.Remove from the flame and allow it cool completely.Once cooled,combine the capsicum and tomatoes and blend in a mixer till smooth.
5.Transfer the mixture into a deep pan ,add the chilli flakes,salt and 1/2 cup of water and mix well.Cook on a a medium flame for about 2 to3 minutes.
6.Add the roasted oats and mix well.Cook on a medium flame for about 1 minute and stir if required.
7.Serve immediately.

South Indian Dish:

Oats Adai:

Ingredients:

1.1 cup coarsely crushed quick cooking rolled oats.
2.1/2 cup finely chopped spinach
3.1/4 cup finely chopped onions
4.1 tbsp finely chopped curry leaves
5.1 tsp finely chopped green chillies
6.1/2 tsp finely chopped ginger
7.1/4 tsp turmeric powder
8.1 tsp cumin seeds
9.1/2 tsp chilli powder
10.1/4 tsp asafoetida powder
11.Salt to taste
12.4 tsp oil for cooking

Method:

1.Combine all the ingredients in a deep bowl along with 1 1/2 cups of water and mix well.
2.Cover with a lid and keep it aside for 15 minutes.
3.Heat the pan,grease it with 1/4 tsp of oil,pour a ladleful of the batter on the tava,spread it in a circular motion to make a small circle.Cook it using 1/4 tsp of oil till it turns golden brown in color form both the sides.
4.Serve immediately with green chutney.
