Shallots/Small onions(Kunjulli) – 15 nos(peeled)

Chilly powder – 1 Tsp

Turmeric powder – 1/2 tsp

Coriander powder – 1/2 tsp

Garam Masala – 1/2 tsp

Cumin Seeds (Jeerakam) – 1/2 tsp

Mustard seeds 1/2 tsp

Tomatoes – 2 nos(paste)

Curry Leaves – 1 spring

Oil – As reqd

Salt – As reqd

DIRECTIONS

Step 1

For preparing shallots dry, heat oil in a vessel and splutter mustard seeds.

Step 2

Saute in the cumin seeds.

Step 3

Add in the tomato paste with chili powder, turmeric powder, coriander powder, garam masala, and salt. Saute it for 2 minutes on low flame with curry leaves.

  • 10-15 Curry leaves
  • 5-6 Dry red chilies

Instructions

  1. Dry Roast Coconut until browned.
  2. Dry roast the remaining roasting ingredients until browned.
  3. Add the roasted ingredients in a blender along with some water and grind to make a paste.
  4. Heat coconut oil in a pan.
  5. Once the oil is hot, add mustard seeds and let them crackle for a few seconds.
  6. Add onion and garlic and fry for 4-5 minutes.
  7. Now add the ground masala, chili powder, turmeric powder, and salt to taste along with a cup of water.
  8. Bring this to a boil and simmer for 10-15 minutes.
  9. Squeeze the tamarind and add the water in the curry and cook for another minute.
  10. Heat coconut oil for tempering in a pan.
  11. Once the oil is hot, add mustard seeds, curry leaves, and dry red chilies and let them crackle for a few seconds.
  12. Pour the tempering over the curry.
  13. Serve hot with steamed rice or coconut rice.
