Each corm multiplies into new corms. similarly saffron plant multiplies. august or September months are favorable for sowing saffron. later Seedling formation takes place in mid-October. later, On maturity, they are gathered from the plants by hand picking in early morning. afterward the collected stigmas are separated and dried at warm temperature and then sorted.
PROCESSING OF KASHMIRI KESAR-
A saffron bulb can yield flowers for around 15 day. provided the plant is healthy. And one flower can produce three strands of saffron only. thus One gram of organic saffron comprises nearly 350 strands.
the organic saffron crop gets matured in 3-4 months. later, it is ready to harvest with attaining the height of 15-20 cm. it can be grown in any kind of soil. but calcareous soil is more favorable. because it contains high level of calcium, which is rich in humus content. and has adequately drainage with pH level 6-8. also It grows well in dry temperature and at altitudes from 1500-2800 meters above mean sea level. And snow during winter is highly favorable for flowering in saffron. therefore, Kashmir’s physiological and climatic conditions fulfil its criteria.
