Clementine is a tangor, a hybrid between a willow leaf mandarin orange and a sweet orange. It has a deep orange color and the interior can be separated into 7-14 segments.  Its skin is quite easy to peel, unlike oranges and it does not contain any seeds. It is a fruit that not only tastes delicious but is well loaded with fiber and nutrients.

Word of Caution

Although clementine fruit is a healthy choice, citrus fruits like clementines may also cause allergic reactions in some people, with its symptoms ranging from mild to severe. Atopic dermatitis, mouth ulcers, lesions on the lips or tongue, tingling sensation inside the mouth area, on the inner side of the cheeks are some of the most prevalent indications of clementine allergy. Some people may develop itching or swelling in the throat or digestive troubles like nausea and cramps, after eating citrus fruits like clementines. People with known citrus allergy may avoid or be cautious, while eating clementines. Other than that, it’s always better to exercise natural vigil, while trying something for the first time.

Recipe for Clementine jam

Ingredients

3 pounds clementines

1 cup sugar

juice of 2 lemons

Instructions

Peel the clementines and cut each one in half through the middle to check for seeds.

Put the fruit, in batches if necessary, in the bowl of a food processor and process until smooth.

Pour the puree into a heavy pot and add the sugar and lemon juice. Bring the mixture to boil, then turn down the heat and boil for about 30-40 minutes, stirring fairly often. Do not cover the pot!

The liquid will foam up at first, but will eventually get absorbed. The mixture will start to thicken and get a little deeper and glossier, when it is ready. I like to freeze a small plate and test the jam by dropping some onto it and letting it cool. If the jam firms up, it’s done. If not, keep boiling a little longer.

When it is done, ladle it into clean jars and let cool on the counter. When it reaches to room temperature, cover and refrigerate. It can be stored for at least 10 days in the fridge.

Recipe for Clementine sunshine smoothie

INGREDIENTS

4 clementines, preferably chilled

½ cup ice

¼ cup yogurt or almond milk (plain or vanilla flavors work)

Tiny dash sea salt

Totally optional add-in ideas (I prefer the smoothie as listed above):

Chunks of frozen banana for extra creaminess (you can scale back on the ice if using frozen banana)

¼ teaspoon ground turmeric for exotic flavor and more immunity-boosting properties

Drizzle of honey for extra sweetness

One drop of pure vanilla extract for more of a dreamsicle flavor

INSTRUCTIONS

Use your fingers to peel the clementines and pull each one in half. Pull out any excess pith in the center and discard it.

Add the yogurt or almond milk to the blender, followed by the clementines, ice and a tiny dash of salt, which enhances the other flavors. Feel free to add any of the optional add-ins suggested above. Blend well, until the clementines have turned into juice and there are no chunks of ice left.

There can be some bits of pith in the smoothie probably. If you don’t mind some texture, pour into a glass and enjoy immediately. For a perfectly smooth smoothie, pour it through a metal sieve into your glass.
