Gallstones: Meaning, Types, Symptoms and Causes.

Gallstones are also known as Cholelithiasis. These are pieces of the solid form of bile juice that form in your gallbladder. The gallbladder is a very small organ located under the liver. Types of Gallstones.

  1. Cholesterol stones: These are very commonly seen in patients suffering from gallstone symptoms. These stones are formed with undigested cholesterol and fat. They have a yellow and brownish color. These are comparatively large and can extend their size rapidly.
  2. Pigment stones: They’re made of bilirubin. they have a dark color and they are generally not large. They are small and strong. 

Symptoms and Signs.

The majority of people have asymptomatic gallstones. This means they don’t experience any symptoms like pain, bloating, vomiting, etc. This is because the stones stay in the gallbladder without much movement and cause no risks.

Sometimes, however, may lead to an inflamed gallbladder. That causes extreme pain. 

The primary symptom is extreme pain that occurs suddenly out of nowhere and gets worse aggressively. This pain generally occurs on the right side of the body, just below the ribs, between the shoulder blades, or in the right shoulder.

Other symptoms include:

  • Pain on the right-hand side of the body, just below the ribs
  • Back pain between the shoulder blades
  • Pain in the right shoulder
  • Vomiting
  • Irritation
  • Annoyed

Other symptoms may include:

  • Pain in your upper belly, often on the right, just under your ribs
  • Pain in your right shoulder or back
  • An upset stomach
  • Other digestive problems, including indigestion, heartburn, and gas.

Causes of Gallstones.

  • Excess cholesterol in your bile: For digestion, bile is needed. but when excess cholesterol is deposited in the gallbladder, it becomes hard and forms a stone.
  • Excess bilirubin in your bile: Cirrhosis, infections, and blood disorders can cause your liver to make too much bilirubin. There are other reasons too but the previous disease plays an important role in producing an excess of bilirubin.
  • Inconsistent weight gain/ loss: Irregular weight loss and gain can also lead to confusing the gallbladder to make excess cholesterol or may not be able to perform the digestion.

Gallstones may form when the chemicals in the gallbladder are out of balance, such as cholesterol, calcium bilirubin, and calcium carbonate.

Experts are not completely sure why some people develop the chemical imbalance in their gallbladder that causes gallstones, while others do not.

However, we do know that gallstones are more common among people with obesity, especially women. 


There are not much precautions that are available that you can consider. Gallstones happen to be very common yet untreatable sort of disease. There is no complete treatment available that is guaranteeing of its complete disappearance.

However, there are some restrictions or you can say cures that one can consider for health as to avoid any sort of stone formation in the body.

One thing is to remain in touch with your physician if you ever caught the above mentioned symptoms. Other thing is to remain aware of the things that you are eating or drinking. What you eat, what you drink, when you sleep, when you wake up, when you exercise, all these things plays a very crucial part in your life.
