10 Nighttime Habits That Could Be Damaging Your Skin

SKIN DAMAGE AT NIGHT

No matter how good your skincare routine is, bad habits can damage your skin. Whether you have bad skincare habits, bad food habits, or unhealthy vices, your skin can suffer from it. The skin of the face is much thinner than the rest of our body, so, we must be very careful about the products we use and should avoid the bad habits that can cause our skin to look ok and healthy.

I know we are all guilty of having bad habits, though they are harmless enough, but certain bad habits negatively affect us and coincidentally enough, a lot of these habits happened at night.

THE UNHEALTHY HABITS YOU DO AT THE NIGHTTIME IS MENTION BELOW AND TRY TO AVOID THEM:

1. EVENING SKINCARE MISTAKES:

Taking great care of your skin during the day with things like the moisturizer and sunscreen is important no matter what the weather it is. You should always apply sunscreen- and a good amount of it too. Your skin is exposed to UV rays no matter whether the weather is rainy or shiny. The exposure of the sun can account for almost 90% of the early signs of ageing. So, always use broad-spectrum SPF 15 or higher to prevent the early onset of wrinkles and to avoid dark spots.

2. NOT WASHING YOUR FACE:

The number one mistake is simply going to bed without giving your face a good wash. Even if you do not wear makeup all day or night you should wash your face, before going to bed. The skin is going through repairing and rebuilding face during the nighttime, and the debris such as dust, smoke, and skincare products can clog your pores leading to acne.

3. SKIPPING ON SLEEP:

There is such a thing as beauty sleep that is getting at least 7 hours of sleep for healthy and glowing skin. But getting less than 6 hours of sleep at night gives your skin less time to repair itself. Which can lead to more wrinkles and ashy complexion and dark circles under your eyes.

4. CHOOSING THE WRONG ANTI-AGING CREAM:

Nowadays the majority of anti-aging creams are still based on moisturizers such as mineral oil. The dry wrinkles look worse, so any moisturizer helps, but only improves things temporarily, and don’t address the root cause of the wrinkles. Many moisturizers do not work on the causes behind the wrinkles such as collagen loss, free radical damage, sun damage, and environmental factors. Unless there is an active ingredient such as retinol, present in the moisturizer.

5. NOT CHANGING YOUR PILLOWCASES REGULARLY:

Sleeping regularly on the same pillowcase night after night exposes your skin to some pretty nasty stuff, such as bacteria, sloughed-off skin, and sweat. Changing a pillowcase at least weekly is recommended if you are acne-prone.

6. LEAVING ON YOUR MAKEUP:

Dermatologists always stress on washing your face before bed and clearing off every trace of makeup every night. As it will clog your pores and you will wake up in the morning with acne eruptions.

7. USING A PLAIN OLD COTTON PILLOWCASE:

Upgrading a pillowcase to a silk or satin can do wonders for your face and hair. The silk pillowcases are less abrasive to the skin. It helps the skin to remain breathable, hypoallergenic, and less irritating.

8. OVER CLEANING YOUR SKIN:

OVER CLEANING CAUSES SKIN DAMAGE

Over cleansing your skin, compromises the moisture barrier and microbiome of the skin’s natural protective layer. It has an evidence that over-cleansing can cleanse off natural bacteria on the skin and makes it more susceptible to infections, breakouts, and parched looking skin.

9. KEEPING THE ROOM TOO WARM:

A warm temperature for the bedroom could be bad for your skin health and can disturb this sleep quality. In studies, it is shown that the body rests better at lower temperatures.

10. TRYING TO GET YOUR VITAMINS THROUGH YOUR CREAM:

  • As we all know vitamin C is very helpful when applied to the skin, whereas, vitamin B isn’t quite as effective. As vitamin B can only get absorbed in the small intestine, so no, matter how much is loaded into your moisturizer or serum it is not going to make a difference.
  • Vitamins like niacin (vitamin B3) are also important for improving skin texture and color but your skin can’t absorb them. So, it is necessary to include leafy greens like spinach, asparagus, beans, and peas in your diet to get vitamin B3.

EPILOGUE:

You know your skin does so much for you. It protects you from unwanted invaders from entering your body and keeps you hydrated. So why not return the favor by treating your skin well with your skincare routine and keeping the above-described points in mind. Following the skincare routine is the ultimate act of self-care, and doing so will keep you fresh, clean, and moisturized after you have done your skincare regime.
